Pick ‘em, Don’t Strum ‘em

This course will introduce players to ONE pattern each week for playing chords plucking one string at a time instead of strumming. The technique will then be applied to some songs. In the final week the FOUR different patterns will be played over a selection of songs chosen by participants.

Course Syllabus

WEEK 1: 4/4 time

 How to use thumb and three fingers to pluck the strings 1 2 3 4

 Learn the basic head to toe pattern on open strings

 Use the pattern over a chord sequence

 Accompany a simple song with the pattern

 Singing and plucking at the same time using a well-known song

 Playing in 8/8 time by adding ‘ands’ 1&2&3&4&

 Accompany the song above using the ‘ands’

 (optional extension) Altering the basic 4/4 rhythm to make a 3/4 rhythm by playing, for example, the 3 and 4 quickly. 1 2 34 (or could be 12 3 4; or 1 23 4)

WEEK 2: 3/4 time

 Review of week 1 pattern

 Learn a basic 3/4 pattern – plucking top and bottom strings at the same time 1(tb) 2 3

 Practise the pattern over a chord sequence

 Accompany a simple song with the pattern

 Adapting the pattern to 4/4 time by adding an extra pluck 1(tb) 2 3 4

 Use the adapted pattern over a simple 4/4 song.

 Play some songs which use 4/4 and 3/4 time.

WEEK 3: 6/8 time

 Review of week 1 and week 2 patterns

 Learn a basic 6/8 pattern – down for three/ up for three 123 223

 Practise the pattern over a chord sequence

 Accompany a simple song with the pattern

 Comparing 6/8 with 3/4 – make 6/8 into a 3/4 time 123 223 into 1&2&3&

 Use both the 6/8 pattern and the 3/4 pattern in a well-known song

WEEK 4: Three finger pattern

 Review of patterns from weeks 1,2 and 3

 Learn a thumb plus two fingers pattern to play in 6/8 time 123 223

 Practise the pattern over a chord sequence

 Accompany a simple song with the pattern

 Adapt the pattern to make 4/4 time 1 2& 3 4& ; (or as an optional extension make an 8/8 time 1&a2&a3&a4&a)

 Song practice using the above patterns

WEEK 5: Practise and application using songs selected by participants
